Good advice is not the same as advocacy.
You may have generous colleagues, experienced mentors and people who genuinely want you to succeed—and still have no one speaking for your work when decisions are made.
A mentor helps you think.
A connector introduces you.
A champion speaks specifically about your work.
A sponsor has relevant influence and uses it to support an opportunity.
The Sponsor Map is an interactive career-strategy tool that helps you understand which of those relationships you currently have, how healthy your network really is and where the important gaps sit.
This is not a networking planner, contact database or instruction to schedule more coffee meetings. It is a focused assessment of whether the right people know your work, understand what you want next and can carry an accurate account of your contribution into rooms you are not in.
What the tool helps you do
Add up to eight people from around your work and assess each relationship using a simple six-question Champion Test.
The tool looks beyond whether someone is supportive. It considers:
- whether they have seen your work firsthand;
- whether they can describe your strengths specifically;
- whether they know what you want next;
- whether they can reach the decisions that matter;
- whether they have ever acted on your behalf;
- whether the relationship is current enough to activate naturally.
From there, The Sponsor Map classifies the role each person is currently playing and gives you a clear assessment of the health of your professional advocacy network.
Your personalised assessment includes
- an overall Champion Health result;
- scores across evidence, message, advocacy, access and resilience;
- a breakdown of your advisers, validators, connectors, champions and sponsors;
- your three most important network gaps;
- signs that you are too dependent on one person or one reporting line;
- areas where people know you but not your distinctive contribution;
- relationships with influence but insufficient knowledge of your work;
- a focused Priority Three: one relationship to maintain, one to strengthen and one gap to expand into.
You leave with three realistic next moves—not a list of people you now feel obliged to manage.
Built-in scripts
The tool also gives you practical wording for moments such as:
- making your career direction clearer;
- sharing evidence without sounding performative;
- asking for an introduction;
- requesting access to visible work;
- asking to be considered for an opportunity;
- reconnecting with an older champion;
- testing what decision-makers would need to understand about you.
The language is calm, proportionate and designed to sound like a credible professional conversation—not networking theatre.
Lightweight tracking
Record only the actions that materially change a relationship:
- an introduction;
- an invitation into a useful room;
- visible work shared;
- credit given;
- a recommendation;
- an opportunity allocated;
- your name put forward;
- support offered during a decision.
The classification updates as the evidence changes, allowing you to see whether encouragement is becoming access or advocacy.
Use The Sponsor Map when
- you have mentors but are not sure anyone is advocating for you;
- your work is respected inside your immediate team but not visible beyond it;
- you are preparing for promotion, an internal move or a larger role;
- influential people know your name but have not seen enough of your work;
- your career support depends heavily on one manager;
- you want to build professional relationships without treating people as transactions;
- you need to understand who can credibly speak for you when you are not present.
